White Hill, found on Cape Breton Island is the province's tallest point at 532 metres (1745 feet). White Hill is an extremely remote low bump on a marshy, windswept upland about 20 km away from the nearest road and 10 km away from any maintained hiking trails. White hill is found in Cape Breton Highlands National Park. White Hill is a pretty easy hiking “trail” to use as there are old fire roads to walk on but beware on some points the fire roads got covered in bush, deep and unstable mud, and the fire roads don't go completely to the summit. Sydney is known as the island’s historical capital. Sydney, Nova Scotia is a perfect mix between metropolitan charm and down home hospitality. Sydney was founded in 1785 and named in honour of Britain’s Home Secretary at the time, Thomas Townsend, 1st Viscount Sydney. A couple years later Sydney, Australia would be named after him. The original settlers of Sydney were mostly former soldiers and loyalists escaping the aftermath of the American Revolution. This town was the english capital of Cape Breton Island until 1820 when Cape Breton Island became part of Nova Scotia. Sydney is rich in coal fields it was these coal fields that would transform Sydney from colonial town in Cape Breton to a major industrial center. Sydney soon became a world leader in steel production. That industrial growth caused Sydney to officially become a city in 1904. Today, Sydney continues to welcome people from around the world.
