Early Recognition of Sepsis
Sepsis is a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment to prevent patients from progressing to sever sepsis or septic shock. Signs and symptoms of sepsis can be hard to indentify because it can mirror other diseases. According to, Cullen, M., Fogg, T., & Delaney, A. (2013), “it is an infection that causes chemical to release into the bloodstream and causes inflammatory process throughout the body. Due to the inflammatory process it can trigger a cascade of changes that can cause multiple organ systems to fail.” If treatment is not initiated in timely manner sepsis can cause patients to compromise very quickly The purpose of this proposal is to improved the way patients is being screened for sepsis in the emergency department triage area. Sepsis is one of the leading causes of death in the United States every year and about 1.6 million of patients are treated every year for sepsis and the number is doubling every year (Lopez-Bushneil, K., Demary, W.S., & Jaco, C. 2014).
