I am going to explain the various factors that influence the performance of a website. I am going to include a comparison with ‘user-side’ and ‘sever-side’ factors that can influence website performance.
Clients - Machines used to connect to those services
Clients direct their requests to a specific software server running on the overall server machine
Servers- Machines that provide services to other machines
Have software on them that lets them provide one or more services on the Internet - web server, an e-mail server & an FTP server
A web server is hosting websites
When a web page is rendered, most of the time is tied up in downloading all the components in the page. Images, stylesheets, scripts, flash, etc. each of these components require separate requests. Internet connection
• Underlying transport of connection – Setting up an Internet link can be a costly project. Web presence providers often cut corners and use an inexpensive frame relay network, or other public networks, for their "local-loop". This means that your data is sharing communications lines with multiple other users before it ever reaches the Internet. It is likely to experience packet loss due to this type of connection. Make sure that your provider is connected to the net via a dedicated circuit for their local loop.
• Proximity to the backbone - The backbone cabling system offers interconnections between broadcasting rooms, equipment rooms, main terminal space, and entrance facilities. It includes backbone cables, intermediate and main cross-connects, mechanical terminations, and patch cords or jumpers used for backbone-to-backbone cross-connections. The backbone also ranges between buildings in a campus
