The probable cause of this alteration is:
The patients current medical condition of MI, which increased his extracellular fluid volume r/t decreased cardiac output, decreased nutritional intake, and subsequent acute kidney damage-- which decreased reuptake r/t the renal tubules, would have caused the low total protein levels in the patient’s blood. The inflammation from his kidneys and his liver would also contribute to this issue. The patient’s position when the blood sample was taken would affect total protein levels because if he were supine then he would indicate lower levels of protein than if he were in a standing position. (Leeuwen, et al, 2013)
B. Complications that may occur due to this alteration are:
The patient did have mild edema in the lower extremities and low protein is a major contributor of edema. The patient presented with other complications of low protein levels: muscle weakness and fatigue. (Leeuwen, et al, 2013)
