• The most interesting bill I’ve heard about is AB 3131, which would require police departments to hold a public hearing before acquiring federal surplus military equipment. The bill specifies which military equipment will apply, including, but not limited to, tanks, grenades, and drones. I think this bill would make important strides in mending the relationship between community members and law enforcement, especially low-income and minority communities.

• The deadline for the legislators to pass the state budget is June 15th. The voting threshold is a majority in each house. The threshold used to be a supermajority with a two-thirds requirement. The threshold is important because it determines how much bipartisan support a budget will need to pass. The threshold is also significant because we don’t get paid if the budget is not passed on time.
