1. What is the most interesting bill that you have heard about?
• The most interesting bill I’ve heard about is AB 3131, which would require police departments to hold a public hearing before acquiring federal surplus military equipment. The bill specifies which military equipment will apply, including, but not limited to, tanks, grenades, and drones. I think this bill would make important strides in mending the relationship between community members and law enforcement, especially low-income and minority communities.

2. Look at the bail reform bills. What do you think about them?
• I think that SB 10 is a crucial step to ensuring that our state’s legal system is more equitable. I believe that determining someone’s release based on their …show more content…
I think this bill will also relieve crowded jails and make the criminal justice system more impartial.

3. Why do some bills require 2/3rds votes?
• Urgency measures and appropriation bills need two-thirds support.

4. When is the deadline to pass the budget? What is the vote threshold to pass the budget? Has it always been what it is now? Why is the threshold important?
• The deadline for the legislators to pass the state budget is June 15th. The voting threshold is a majority in each house. The threshold used to be a supermajority with a two-thirds requirement. The threshold is important because it determines how much bipartisan support a budget will need to pass. The threshold is also significant because we don’t get paid if the budget is not passed on time.

5. What is the total amount of this year’s budget?
• The 2018-2019 total budget is $133.3 billion.

6. Who is the current budget chair? How many subcommittees are there and who are the chairs?
• The budget chair is Phil Ting. There are six budget subcommittees and the chairs are Dr. Joaquin Arambula, Kevin McCarty, Richard Bloom, Jim Cooper, Shirley N. Weber, and Philip Y.
