Summary:
In this unit, I learned about setting up an online storefront and about putting protections in place for performing credit card transactions. The unit was primarily focused on the use of osCommerce for these functions. To become familiar with this, for the week’s assignment, I installed osCommerce onto my server and got a basic version of their shop in place.

I received helpful feedback regarding my most recent learning journal and will be in contact with you via e-mail regarding your comments. I didn’t really have much other feedback. While I felt I had some pretty comprehensive coverage of methods to protect information, I found even more from seeing what my peers had done and aspects I had not thought about investigating. It was very helpful in determining all of the different work that should be done to get protections in place. I can’t say anything particularly caused wonder or surprise, but there was a lot of valuable information from this week’s discussion.
• What happened that felt particularly challenging? Why was it challenging to me?
This week actually wasn’t too bad. The biggest challenge was trying to find the security section of the osCommerce manual which, as far as I can tell, doesn’t actually exist. The closest thing people seemed to come across, from what was referenced in the discussion posts, was security discussions on their forums. Failing to find it, I just investigated the information from various other sources. If you’re looking to update the course, I might look at the different sources students used for this week’s discussion, as the osCommerce reading assignments we had this week seemed pretty unenlightening.
