1820’a through 1840’s tariffs have been passed causing a ripple within the country. The tariff of 1828 was where things really kicked off. The Tariff of 1828 raised all of the prices of imported foreign goods. It stated that if you wanted to buy Cheaper british goods that you would have to pay 50% more than what the actual price is. He brought up the Nullification crisis. The nullification crisis was a point that Jackson scored upon in his time in presidency. He explained that a state can reject any federal law that they don't want to adby by. But the only problem with this that if the state refuses to aby by this law then the question of the law will go back in to congress's hands, and if they still want to apply that law to that certain state(s) then that state(s) can choose to succeed. This exact case did happen within the south. When the tariff of 1832 was passed most northerners and about half of the southerners supported this tariff but the other half of southerners feel like congress didn’t lower the tax low enough; And on November 24, 1832 A State convention adopted an Ordinance of Nullification. This declared that the tariff of 1828 and 1832 were unconstitutional.
This disagreeing cause a force bill to happen. The force bill is a law that gives Andrew Jackson the right to use military and the army if necessary to enforce the laws Against South Carolina.
So because of these controversial tariffs, the force bill, arguments between the two. This put fear and doubt into south’s state of mind. They wondered if the would be able to survive with all of these crazy tariffs and rules that are setting into place. This soon drive them all the way to succession.
