In observation 1, see appendix 1 child A was introduced to a new resource, Numicon. Using Numicon as an approach to learning offers children multi-sensory learning with patterned shapes. Numicon act as an important learning tool as children will not always understand abstract learning using representation first. Oxford University Press (2017) agree that using Numicon as a resource aid the children’s independence in learning. The concrete resource helps children to visualise and manipulate the number shapes which support children when adding two shapes together. Massey (2008, cited in Whitebread, Coltman, 2015) observes that throughout the preoperational stage, children have a greater ability to think about things and can use symbols to mentally represent objects. During the observation Child A adapted to this new task quickly by utilizing learning materials unknown to him, this illustrates Piaget’s Concrete operational stage, whereby the child has gained important knowledge through physical interactions within the classroom environment and is starting to create logical structures in their work. Piaget observed, “a child develops from a series of cognitive structures built one above the other” (Piaget, J. 1977).
