The second most common deviation was that the nurse did not explain the medication to the patient, which is crucial to the patient’s compliance of the medication and understanding of adverse effects it may have. The most common medication errors included the drug not being available and administering the wrong dose. Overall, the study found the percentage of deviations per encounter to be 11% and percentage of medication errors per encounter to be 0.32%. Also, the study found significant large effect sizes on the comparison of individual deviations of practice and the overall medication errors. The results of this study reveal that for every 10,000 encounters, 770 medication administration errors will occur and 27,630 incidents of noncompliance of safe practice will happen. These results show the importance of compliance to safe practices in medication administration to ensure quality care and patient …show more content…
Because this study was done only in hospitals that are in the CALNOC registry, there could be a question of whether this is the best representation of the general population, which could be a threat to external validity. The study lists this as a limitation because it is possible that unmeasured systematic differences could make this study’s sample different than the results that would arise from all hospitals. It is clear though, that this study is a great representation of all the hospitals that are participating in the CALNOC registry, which means high external validity within the
