(Web MD, ) I was one of these people; I used to swim a lot especially in high school for my physical education classes. I never had asthma symptoms until my junior year and when I went to the doctor was diagnosed with exercised induced asthma. Since being well into my adult years, I have been diagnosed with asthma and at times will experience symptoms that affect my daily activities. While breathing normally the air that is inhaled becomes warmed and moist by the nasal passages. When exercising people tend to breathe through their mouth and the air that is inhaled is colder and drier causing exercise induced asthma. The colder drier air causes symptoms such as coughing, tightening of the chest muscles, wheezing, feeling more fatigued that usual and shortness of breath when exercising. Symptoms of exercise-induced asthma happen anywhere after five minutes to twenty minutes after beginning exercise. Once diagnosed, a person may not want to exercise much because of the symptoms. It is recommended not to avoid physical activity or exercise just because a person gets diagnosed with this type of asthma, there are ways to control the symptoms so that normal physical activity can be maintained.
