We as nurses must be able to have effective communication between ourselves and our clients. According to Harrington & Terry (2013), a common tool used to assess therapeutic communication in nursing programs is a process recording. Our clinical instructors requested that we use the Interaction Process Analysis. In some instances, you may record or videotape this interaction. However, our instructors wanted us to recall our conversation with the client from memory, thus giving our full undivided attention to this important interaction.

She stated that the patient H.H. would be an ideal candidate. She stated that H.H. was friendly and would most likely be the best choice to talk with a nursing student. The nurse indicated that H.H. was one day post op from having a hernia repair. Before conducting the IPA, I went into the room 695, and introduced myself to H.H, who was sitting in bed and stated that I was a nursing student assigned to her for the day. I told H.H that I needed to complete a head-to-toe assessment and explained everything involved with that and that I also needed to have a therapeutic communication.
