Nursing leadership styles continue to evolve as does the roles nurses have in the level of autonomous care provided. Without doubt, nurses provide a pivotal voice as advocate for the vital role the advanced practice nurse provides as a member of the health care team. Advanced practice nurses in addition to providing evidence based healthcare, continue to build on the roots of authoritative, democratic and laissez-fare leadership styles to promote autonomous practice. Cox (2016) recognized that effective leaders should be visionaries who are adaptable and have the ability to inspire others toward a collective goal. At the same time the use of interactive leadership style recognizes that leaders are responsible for quality and outcomes of not just the followers but the goals for which they seek to accomplish. Utilization of the democratic leadership style promotes the use of constructive criticism, in doing so the advanced practice nurse becomes aware of the barriers to autonomous practice. Villegas and Allen (2012) noted that while research shows the advanced practice nurses provide safe, cost effective and high quality care, most medical professional organizations continue to cite patient safety concerns as opposition for the removal of scope-of-practice barriers. This concern lends itself to a prime democratic leadership opportunity to build upon the “we” component of the democratic leadership style, pointing out not only the positive relationship outcomes built between providers, but the improved care which results from the cooperation and coordination of the health care team.
Brandt’s (1994) interactive leadership style provides yet another positive reflection on the unique skills of the advanced practice nurse in rendering care. By becoming aware of each team member’s level of skill and knowledge further highlights the benefits of the team approach in rendering health care.
