An example of educating the public and other hospital staff (physicians and authority figures) working to solve the nursing shortage is shown in “Magnet Hospitals use Culture, not Wages, to Solve Nursing Shortage,” by Russel C. Coile Jr. This is shown on page 225, by “Not all hospitals are suffering a labor shortage. Some ‘magnet hospitals’ are outcompeting their market with low turnover and high staff morale. These magnet institutions promote their nursing staff’s job satisfaction, but professionally and personally (Coile, 2001, pp. 225).” This is important because it shows that at hospitals with reeducated physicians and with staff that feels appreciated and respected the nursing shortage can be solved. “Radical Change: One solution to the Nursing Shortage,” by Steven M. Barney shows how the relationship between physician and nurse has worsened over time and needs to change to help combat the nursing shortage. This is shown on page 220, in “As many as two-thirds of nurses interviewed claimed to suffer verbal abuse from physicians at least once every two to three months (Barney, 2002, pp. 220). This is important because it shows the issue of physicians mistreating an essential part of the healthcare field. As soon as the solution is implemented and the education processes begins, there will be a noticeable improvement in the shortage of nursing staff within a year or two. It should be expected that with this solution implemented that the nursing shortage would be solved within five to six years. More nurses will stay within the healthcare field, more students will choose to become nurses, and people will have more appreciation for the job that nurses do. While it may take a year for the education program to become completely into effect, it will solve the shortage rather quickly. The advantages to this solution would be that it is fairly cost effective and easy to implement across the nation, nurses would take more pride in their jobs, and patient safety and care would improve. As a nation that relies on nurses to help care for us and our family members when we are ill or injured, we should educate those that do not value nurses and help put an end to the nursing shortage as to better improve hospitals, nursing homes, and patient-nurse
