Chapter 3 Study Sheet

1. The body has three primary energy systems to produce ATP (our direct source of energy for most cellular processes.) These three energy systems work in concert although one energy system usually predominates. Review Table 3.1 1. Creatine Phosphate System 2. Anaerobic Glycolysis 3. Oxidative Phosphorylation

2. Be able to compare and contrast the three energy systems and give examples of physical activities, exercise, or sports in which each is the predominant energy system.

3. The Krebs cycle is a series of oxidation-reduction reactions (oxidation = chemical process of giving up electrons) and (reduction = chemical process of accepting electrons) used to metabolize carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. The primary function of the Krebs cycle is to oxidize carbohydrates, fats, and proteins and ready them for ATP production.

4. The respiratory exchange ratio (RER) is the ratio of carbon dioxide produced to oxygen consumption. This is important to determine percentage of fats and carbohydrate used for metabolism. Page 88 shows an athlete being tested. You do not need to know the calculation

5. VO2 max can be determined with the metabolic cart. VO2 max refers to the maximum amount of O2 that an individual can utilize during intense or maximal aerobic exercise. This is helpful in determining an athletes fitness level. Theoretically, the more O2 an athlete can use during high level exercise, a greater amount of O2 is getting to the working muscle and more ATP (energy) can be produced. Be able to explain what VO2 max is.
