Key to life Life is about learning to see the world as it is, to be rid of one selfishness and embrace each other’s differences.
A surprise revelation In O’ Conner’s revelation, the character of Mrs. Turnpin, a supercilious and racist old woman is introduced. The story takes places in a doctor’s office waiting room where after judging and feeling superior to everyone else, Mrs. Turnpin is attacked by a teenage girl named Mary grace who tells her to go back to hell while referring to her as an old horn dog. This attack triggered a vision later in the story where Mrs. Turnpin sees the people like her whom she believes to be above everyone else to be the last one in the procession to heaven while the blacks and white trash that she believed to be at the bottom of society were found in the front of the possession. This story is a revelation given through Mary grace who represents the grace of god to Mrs. Turpin to show her that she need to be humble. It is a reminder that everyone is equal and that one should never feel superior to others or live as if they are the center of the Universe. The revelation was O’Conner’s lesson that one should not place themselves above others
