What are heroic qualities? In The Odyssey, the main character Odysseus had many heroic qualities. I believe that Odysseus’ most important heroic quality was that he was loyal to his family. He showed this loyalty when he left the witch Circe’s castle even though he could be immortal, wanted to leave from the goddess Calypso’s island the moment he washed up there, and finally that he left Calypso’s island the moment that he was given a chance to leave. First off when Odysseus and his men arrived at the island that had Circe’s castle his men went searching for food. When 1 came back and said that a witch turned the men into animals Odysseus when up there to save them. After eating grass that would make him immune to Circe’s magic he stayed there for what felt like 5 days. In reality it was 5 years. After finding this out Circe told him that he had to go to the underworld to get directions to his home Ithaca. He shows his loyalty to his family because even though he had to go to the land of the dead, it did not stop him from wanting to get home. She asks Odysseus if he wants to be free and tells him that there is dry wood in a cave on the other side of the island where her home is. Without hesitation he goes and starts to build a crude ship out of it. Even though Calypso tells him that he can stay he declines and begins his journey home. After sailing for a few days Poseidon releases the rest of his anger upon him destroying his ship and forcing him to swim for two days and two nights before he finally reaches the land of Phaeacia. This shows his loyalty because even in the worst odds he kept going to reach his beloved family that he had been trying to get to the whole
