Based on Odysseus’ decisions and behaviors, it is clear that he has not learned any lessons from his encounters. Throughout his journey, Odysseus sole focus has been on gaining glory, with actually returning home as an afterthought. This focus on glory is evident in the fact that he needs frequent reminders of his goal of returning home during Book 11. A major example of one of these reminders is during his conversation with Elpenor, where he pleads “And by / your son, Telemachus, whom you abandoned / alone at home, I beg you!” (Book 11, 68-70).
