In the play Oedipus the King by Sophocles the protagonist Oedipus is the tragic hero
- Oedipus embodies many characteristics but the two most important are the reversal of fortune and the realization of errors. Tragic heroes have to hold these traits to be a great developed character. He has these traits and these traits makes the character a tragic hero. For example, Oedipus was once a great king but met his downfall when he realized he was the killer of Laius showing his realization of errors. Throughout the story, he was a great king but as Thebes became cursed his life took a major turn for the worst. As the story developed, he brought out the reversal of fortune and his realization of errors that showed his rise and fall. Many think he was a noble king however through his flaws and errors he is a tragic hero.

Oedipus contains many traits but the reversal of fortune really brings out his true characteristics. He was once a noble king but as the story developed his flaws and errors became more visible. In the quote, “If you are the man he says you are, believe me, you were born for pain” (Oedipus the King 232) it shows his reversal of fortune. This quote shows that Oedipus has been a noble king but he was bound to encounter the pain he was born with. He has been at the top all his left but when he finds out about the curse his life takes a major turn for the worst.
