A tragic hero by definition is a great or virtuous character of high standing in a dramatic tragedy who is destined for downfall, suffering, or defeat through one of their flawed characteristics that the audience is able to connect to. Therefore by this definition, Oedipus is not a tragic hero. Oedipus is not a tragic hero for the simple fact that he has more than one characteristic that leads to his downfall. Oedipus is a perfect example of a character of high standing, because Oedipus is king of Thebes. Oedipus is a king with a higher standing than other kings due to the fact that instead of being appointed, or birthed into the royal family (even though we find out that he was), Oedipus had to work to become King of Thebes by answering the Sphinx’s riddle. This part of the story doesn’t only tell us how Oedipus became king, but also that one of Oedipus’s great qualities is intelligence, or knowledge. Although Oedipus is a man of high standing, this high standing as King of Thebes is not enough to keep him from his fate of downfall and suffering. Apollo tells Thebes that in order to get rid of the plague that is upon them, they need to find the person that killed Laius and either banish, or kill them. Once Oedipus finally realizes that he is the one that killed Laius, he accepts being banished without complaint.
