In scene one, Sophocles brings up the different mentalities of Oedipus and Creon through the fact that Oedipus stubbornly sticks to his unsubstantiated belief while Creon tries to logically approach the matter. As Oedipus is in a position of power, it is understandable that he has the fear of those who covet the king's throne when Teiresias speaks "blasphemous" words upon Creon's recommendation. Even though Oedipus is firmly set on his rage induced accusation of treason against Creon, interestingly enough, the said man responds, "A true friend thrown aside--why, life itself is not more precious!"
