In the 1930’s when men flooded to California for work, the only way to survive was to get a job and keep it. In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, two men named George and Lennie find themselves on a ranch in Soledad, California. They meet a man named Slim who is depicted as the leader of the migrant workers on the ranch. He has a skill that sets him apart from all the other workers who just do manual labor. It is clear that everyone respects each other, but Slim gets that above and beyond respect from everyone because he is the leader of the ranch and has a strong moral voice on the ranch.
Our first introduction of Slim is very descriptive and gives us a strong understanding of what Slim is like. “A tall man in the doorway. He held a crushed
