All George has wanted is to protect Lennie, and he does this. In attempt to save Lennie from those after him for his murder, he finds him down by the riverbank. As George tells Lennie the story of their farm, it seems like George begins to realize that the plan is far out of reach at this point. They can’t keep running, and Lennie is the only piece of him that kept him hoping for the future. He is forced to the decision of shooting Lennie, protecting him for the last time from the many angry migrant workers.
