George and Lennie have traveled together and done many things with one another. They have experienced events that have shaped their lives. George defends Lennie, and Lennie defends George. They need each other to survive. They have each others backs at all times and are the best of friends.
Or are they? Friendship is a positive aspect in the text. It gives the reader hope that these friends will achieve their dream together. Friendship also makes the reader feel at ease because they have each other. This is important because they would not survive without each other. If Lennie did not have George, he would most likely die. George takes care of him since he has a mental disability. If George did not have Lennie, he would be very lonely. In the story, George says that “We got somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us.” (Steinbeck, page 14)
They take care of each other in different ways. Lennie helps George mentally, and George helps Lennie physically. Lennie states that “I got you too look after me, and you got me to look after you.” (Steinbeck, page 14) Although the pair sometimes fights, they still are friends and are there for each other. Lennie praises George and views him almost as a father figure. George always rants about how better off he would be without Lennie. Lennie is hurt for a moment, but is still loyal to George. Lennie always stays loyal to George no matter what happens. It is relatable to a dog/ human relationship. George will never leave him (permanently) because he is loyal to Lennie. Not only do they need each other, they love each other. However, loyalty did have a bad side. Lennie was a little bit too loyal to George.
