Both wore black, shapeless hats and both carried tight blanket rolls slung over their shoulders.”(Steinbeck 2) This represents that George and Lennie are not equals because from the content one is leading the other one around. This could mean that one of the people in the group is leading the other one around because he has to or he wants to. However, in the second part of the content, it addresses that they are both wearing the exact same clothes which implies that they are good friends because they have interest in the exact same things. Since both of them are friends then that could mean that one of them has some sort of disability or weakness that doesn’t make them the same. George made sure that Lennie felt safe. When Lennie was put down, George wanted to do it himself because he remembered about Candy’s dog. “Well-hell! I had him so long. Had him since he was a pup. I herded sheep with him. You wouldn’t think to look at him now, but he was the best damn sheep dog I ever seen.” (Steinbeck 54) This represents as foreshadowing for what happens later in the book when Lennie has to be put down.
