Have you, the reader, ever thought why some fantastic novels are banned or challenged? “Of Mice and Men,” this book first became banned in 1953 in Ireland and shortly after in the 1970s it became banned in cities all over the United States. The reasons why it is/was banned is because of racial slurs, profanity, offensive language, violence and offending the mentally disabled people. It teaches important values, and it educates children about what is going on in the world. This book shows how families and individuals struggled through The Great Depression; it puts the readers in the character’s perspective, and it emotionally connects them to the story. “Of Mice and Men” should not be banned, because it shows how life was back then living in the ranch in the 1930s.
John Ernst Steinbeck (1902-1968) is the author of the novel “Of Mice and Men.” He was born in the area of Salinas, California, came from an average family. Steinbeck worked his way through college at Stanford University but never graduated. He first became widely known as “Tortilla Flat (1935)”. (John ). It should be a book given to the children/students to open their eyes to the historical meaning Steinbeck is trying to convey the main point of the book. He doesn’t mean to offend anyone regardless of how harsh he may come off when he uses profanity, racial slurs, offensive language, violence, or the mentally disabled people. Parents and schools should not ban this novel because of such reasons; it gives an insight to the 1930s. It teaches important values and shows different concepts on how the world
