Why is the emotional connection so strong?
McGinnis captivates the reader with the topic of sexual assault one that many have an emotional connection to as sexual assault and bullying is a horrific thought. The reader from the start of the article feels shame for what is described in the first paragraph. McGinnis starts the emotional connection giving a short anecdote, “Protesting the university’s handling of her sexual-assault case, Sulkowicz began carrying the 50-pound mattress from class to class, saying she would continue until graduation or until the student she accused of assaulting her was expelled.” (McGinnis,1). The first hand testimony of Emma and helps the piece attract attention and gain interest of the reader.The audience respects the cause as well as has an emotional investment to not only the girl in the story, Emma Sulkowicz, but to the cause that McGinnis is featuring. Some of the most helpful logic that created a strong case for McGinnis was the use of government statistics from the Department of Justice as well as The White House. McGinnis has also recognized those who oppose her argument and shares stories of the males that have been accused or found guilty of sexual assault on campuses.
