Officer Palafox was dispatched to the area of 627 Templeton Avenue on the report of a 5150 W&I subject with a knife. He was able to locate the scene in a timely manner. When we arrived, another officer already had the subject a gunpoint. During the apprehension of the subject, Officer Palafox took a passive role. I observed the following areas needing improvement;
• Officer Palafox stood back and I had to direct him to assist an officer with handcuffing the subject and later to search him.
• While conducting a welfare check at the door of the residence, Officer Palafox was using his gun hand to transmit his radio traffic. …show more content…
He showed professionalism and empathy while dealing with an upset male subject. Officer Palafox was able to obtain the basic information needed to complete the report, with only minor assistance from me. I noticed the following Officer safety issue:
• When we arrived on scene, Officer Palafox was looking for the address. He realized he was pulling up in front of the target address. As he attempted to back up, a vehicle pulled behind him and blocked his path. Officer Palafox decided to park the vehicle where it was and exit. I later told him a better route to take would have been to keep driving to a safer area.
• While approaching the house and alleged male aggressor exited the house to talk to use. Officer Palafox began to approach the suspect. I suggested he have the subject walk to him, into an area of cover from the house. Officer Palafox did update communication of the change in
