What is the official language of the United States? Some would immediately say English, but since the foundation of this country, complex debates have appeared frequently. Language debates began as early as the 1750’s. Jorge Martin states, “The linguistic hegemony of English in the United States derives early on from its prestigious association with the Anglo-Saxon founders of the nation, who were the sociohistorically dominant group that established and exercised its political power through the newly created national institutions after the War of Independence.” One third of Britain-occupied Pennsylvania spoke German, much to the annoyance of their controllers. In addition, offering documents and translators for over 300 languages would be extremely expensive, whereas an official language would save money that can be used to serve immigrants in English education and job training. Society would be less alienated and function more smoothly under an official language. Most people can understand the language of the government as well as participate in the political system. Less can be spent on redundant services and more on beneficial areas. If there was an emergency, any sort of alert would be done in one language and would be much easier to understand. They focus on society as a whole, strive towards personal freedom, and support workers as well as fair trade. Economically, they want to regulate the economy, business, and industry in addition to increasing taxes and spending. Much like the conservative viewpoint, numerous famous liberals have given their opinion regarding linguistics. John F. Kennedy said, "Immigrants everywhere have enriched and strengthened the fabric of American life. Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth." Liberals believe that arriving immigrants should be free to speak the language they prefer, and there should be no linguistic bias. Following the conservative viewpoint would be violating the rights of citizens. Language preference should be respected. Federal ruling is impractical, inconsiderate, and unfair. The decision should be left to the states regarding English as an official language. Immigration should be legal, with or without documentation, and amnesty should be encouraged. The United States is a nation founded on immigration, and so policies should reflect that. In addition, liberals believe that the ELA should not regulate immigration. Language is a cultural element, not a prompt for political debate. It cannot be regulated. Liberals put emphasis on the melting pot ideology and opinion that multiculturalism enhances our society.
