While Indentured servants were treated as people on the ships, slaves were treated as commodities. African slaves were shipped to the Americas through the Middle Passage. One African slave who experienced the Middle Passage was Olaudah Equiano. Equiano described his journey through the Middle Passage. During his journey, Olaudah and the rest of the slaves were stored under the ship’s deck, most of them chained together in the crowded room. Many of the slaves died due to a hot climate, which created strong odors in the room that caused sickness among the slaves and caused them to perish. The slaves did not receive any food and would face consequences if they sneakily took a fish. As time went by, the climate under the deck got harsher and caused more illnesses and deaths.
