Islam played a hugely impactful role on both Omar Ibn Sayyid and the WPA interviews lives because their religion, like most religions, greatly impacted their culture. When they both came to America part of their culture was stripped away and they has to figure out how their religion was going to shape and fit into American culture. For example Omar spent 25 years of his life studying because Islam holds “literacy, study and scholarship” in such high standards. When he was brought to America as a slave he was no longer able to participate in these things.
