Every day for two years I waited for a letter. Each time my teachers handed out papers my entire body would tremble in anticipation. Each time the letter failed to arrive, I felt the sting of disappointment. I would often wonder why that anticipated letter never came. At the time, I did not know those small second and third grade disappointments would change my academic career.
As a new second grade transfer student, I was not aware of the OMNI program, nor did I receive the opportunity to be admitted into it. OMNI is our elementary school’s accelerated academic program. Once some of my friends began to share their experiences and activities OMNI provided each week, I was disappointed I was not invited to be a part of it. Dissecting squids, watching documentaries, and learning outside of the classroom sounded like a dream come true to me, but unfortunately, my B average grades did not meet the requirements. I began to push myself academically, as getting into the program became my number one priority.

I am surprised my parents didn’t take me to a psychologist. I was probably the most stressed-out third grader in school. For the first time I can recall, I became deeply motivated to achieve academic excellence. I applied myself to my studies to the detriment of my social life, but my mother inspired me and kept me a well-rounded person, insisting upon extracurricular involvement in sports and time for social pursuits.
