Even though a similar event may occur, the interpretation afterwards can vary immensely. In the article “Living Under Circe’s Spell” by Matthew Soyster and “On Being a Cripple” by Nancy Mairs, a specific tone is used to showcase the emotion in each piece of writing. The writers are able to suggest a general idea of their individual take on the specific type of lifestyle they live. Both authors are able to portray a mood that is entirely different from the other by using the literary devices of humor, diction, and metaphors.

Instead of negatively admitting that he needs help, the author uses sarcasm as an uplifting spirit to show that instead of looking down at his disability, he finds a positive motive that allows him to embrace it. The article is written with a comical point of view to assist the author in accepting his faith and overcome the hardship obstacle of being disabled. While Soyster uses the appeal to sarcasm, a different approach of humor is reached through Mairs’s essay. Embracing the fact that she has a limp, Mairs simply compares her slow paced strides to an “inchworm humping along” at the same speed she walks (Mairs). The author’s use of humor towards her distinctive limp, serves as a distraction from the actual hurt she feels. Mairs uses this technique as a mechanism to open her eyes
