She begins, “Of wrongs, and grievance unredress’d complain.” Wheatley tells about how the tyranny was very harsh and crewel. This brings up the theme of slavery. She later goes on to note, “No longer shalt thou dread the iron chain.” In this she is referring to slavery as she hopes it will end. She refers the iron chains to the harsh conditions and the actual chains they are bound to. She uses this theme to capture the imagery of what it was like during the times of slavery. In conclusion, Wheatley expresses many themes in her works such as freedom and slavery. She describes the feeling of a new world in her journey from Africa to America, and her change in mindset through the process. Wheatley captures an image of slavery and the terrible conditions people were in. She describes this with the tyranny and chains that are literally holding Wheatley bound to darkness. Wheatley explains these two themes in different ways and uses them to capture an image in the readers
