Have you ever made a decision that keeps you up at night? When different options come along the conclusion that is made and is either looked back on with regret or satisfaction. Making choices defines what kind of person you are and what kind of person you want to be. As a child many people have trouble finding out where they fit, who they are, or what their purpose is. One’s actions can define one’s self. The most important thing about growing up is discovering who one is through the decisions that are made.
When a child is growing up and discovers who they are, they become happier and feel more accepted. The story “On Being Seventeen, Bright, and Unable to Read” states, “Life began to change . . . for me then because I began to feel better …show more content…
The text of “The Bass the River and Sheila Mant” reads, “The memory of the lost bass haunted me . . . I never made the same mistake again” (Wetherell 47). The narrator is saying they regretted the decision they made in the past, but they learned from their mistake. The experience would change the way they looked at situations in the future. When someone makes a decision they might remorse, it helps them grow as a person and discover what choices they would like to make in the future. The choices one makes show what kind of person they are, their morals, and what they believe in.
Children discover their voice and who they are through routes they take. In the story “I know why the Caged Bird Sings” it describes how a young girl finds her voice through deciding to listen, practicing her speech, and writing. The quote reads, “I liked what difference it made. I was respected . . . for just being Marguerite Johnson” (Angelou 59).
