“On the Come Up” by Angie Thomas, allows the reader to view the world in a way they had never thought of. The first way the story widens the reader's perspective is through its portrayal of family dynamics and struggles. For example, when Bri’s mom stresses to her the importance of obtaining a good education, she tells Bri, “Sorry nothing! What’s your main responsibility, Bri?” “Education over everything,” “Exactly. Education over everything, including rapping. I thought I made that clear?” (Thomas 47). This quote reveals how passionate Bri’s mom is about making sure her kids don’t end up like her and are successful in the future.
