Henry David Thoreau writes “On the duty of Civil Disobedience” and used creative writing when he portrays poetry to explain a deeper meaning. Thoreau explains how the 1849 American government was corrupted. Dr. Martin Luther king Jr writes the “Letter from a Birmingham jail” to the clergymen about how he aimed to change the public policy. Martin Luther king wants to change the public policy because the “whites” were treating the “colored” people wrong. Martin Luther king and Henry David Thoreau text are both directed to the “white” people. Thoreau and Martin Luther king Jr. have similar strategies and differences strategies, the two text has more differences strategies than they do similar.
Thoreau’s writes in a frustrated tone about how the government has a great deal of power, which caused the people follow not with their minds but with there bodies. Thoreau explain how the government would be better if it has less to no power at all, he illustrates it through the motto “That government is best which governs least.” This quote symbolizes that …show more content…

In the letter he says “...vicious mobs lynch your mother and fathers at will and drown your sisters and brothers at whim.” By this he has a morbid tone explaining what the “colored” people go through and how they are treated against their will to be treated that way. He also appeals to sadness when he said “you seek to explain to your six year old daughter why she can't go to the public amusement park… Funtown is closed to colored children” along with “Daddy, why do white people treat colored people so mean.” He appeals to the reader's emotions by using a question from a six year old child.
