If the single effect was to show sadness, then from beginning to end, Poe was able to create the single emotional effect of desolation and misery. The black bird is a direct connection between bereavement and someone’s anxiety for losing a loved one and not knowing where to turn. Perhaps, by illustrating the Raven talking, Poe is trying to convey the message that it is not easy to lose someone and it certainly hurts, but this is the normal circle of life, we were born to one day die. The constant word “Nevermore” demonstrates that we should not get imprisoned by our own feelings; and also, when someone leaves us because of death, they will never come back again.
