The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act Children use different technology from tablet, computers or player devices. Children connect to the Internet to play, watch or even study. Hence, the regulations should be updated to follow up with the new technology to save children privacy on the Internet. This paper will present the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and it will provide a background and history of this law. It will shed lights on cases and provide some examples. In addition, this paper will discuss the ethical and economic impact of COPPA law.

For example, a mother of 11 years old child supported her daughter to have a Facebook page, her reason is “all her friends on Facebook” and “what the harm is in letting my daughter join” (Boyd, Hargittai, Schultz & Palfrey, 2011, p. 1). After COPPA existes every kids’ website must apply the rule. If the website violated COPPA, it will be penalized. For example, Sony BM music was penalized of one million dollars. COPPA is important especially after the rapid increase in Internet use and smart devices. Even though, some parents found a way to avoid that and let their children use non-kids’ websites by providing an older age. However, COPPA has a negative impact especially on educational institutes which do not use children information. Thus, these websites moved from free based to fee-based which may be not affordable for some parents. COPPA is in the middle of people’s agreement and disagreement, negative and positive impacts, but it moved toward children privacy and protection, which is the most important
