Contention between different groups and parties started when different groups of Americans had different ideas of how to interpret the constitution. Unfortunately, at this point in history, there were not many groups that completely abided the constitution. Throughout this DBQ, I will analyze each event, from specific events to underlying problems that eventually led to the greatest divide in American history, the pre-Civil War period. Opposition to slavery began when slaves felt they had no voice in America and that the constitution protected their rights as humans. Some of these groups that were very active in the opposition included the abolitionists. The abolitionists were the leaders in freeing slaves. Though, they had no voice federally, they all spoke to their communities and reinvigorated a passion to gain rights in America. These words were very powerful and got the attention of President Lincoln, who was subsequently murdered in 1865, due to his support of all people living in America. America was in need of a larger change and got that in 1865, when the first effort to abolish slavery happened. Division is sometimes needed in order to solve larger problems with a country, and we definitely see that in these sources. The problem expanded from a few instances of southerners mistreating slaves, to more people mistreating slaves. The backlash seemed to be just as strong as the efforts to create a more slave-centered society. Between the Abolitionists and the upstanders for Black people, slaves practices ended, but that did not mean that equality was reached.
