Marshall Hankins S. Braswell Hero’s Journey Apr 19, 2024 Mulan’s Hero's Journey The name Hua Mulan in Chinese means “heroine.” Disney princess Mulan has become a symbol of heroic behavior. Her character has inspired many young women across the world to defy the traditional gender roles in their society. It can also give them the confidence they need to push their boundaries and comfort zone to do what they wish to do, just by putting their mind to it. You may think to yourself, why or how does Mulan fit the role of a heroine figure? Here is why she fits this role. Calling it an adventure, “Call to adventure,” Mulan’s dad is the only male figure in her family, she takes his place in the war and disguises herself as a man to fight in the war. “Refusal of the call,” Mulan begs her father not to go and stay home where she knows he will be safe because she worries about his general safety now that he is older and since he has already served his country. “Meeting the mentor,” Mulan meets her mentor while she is at training camp. He views her as weak at first, but with guidance and practice she proves him wrong by being stronger and having the abilities of a warrior as a “man.” Crossing the threshold happens when she enters the training camp. Mulan has to fit in as a man so she doesn’t get caught. It starts pretty rough, but she can prove herself that she is “man enough.” Along the way on her journey, she has allies such as “Lucky” the cricket, and “Mushu” the little dragon. Mulan starts to meet her obstacles at this point in her story, she is discovered by the other soldiers when at a battle that she is a young woman instead of a man.
