It was 1543, when Spanish navigator Bartolome Ferrelo, first sighted Oregon’s coast while on an expedition searching for the North West passage. Although other historians say it was Sir Francis Drake, the English explorer, who was searching for the Fountain of Youth, but there was never enough evidence to prove he actually discovered Oregon. Aside from Europeans Oregon was home to many Native American tribes, but sadly diseases and settling in the 1840s drove out most of the tribes. Some of the many tribes that lived in Oregon included the Modoc, the Klamath, the Chinook, the Umatilla, the Paiute, and the Nez Perce, meaning “pierced nose.” Among a band of one Nez Perce tribe,was a man named Hinmatóowyalahtq̓it,(Hin-mah-too-yah-lat-kekt) also known as Chief Joseph. Chief Joseph was born almost twenty years before Oregon entered the Union. When his tribe was being chased by the U.S. Cavalry, the (result of violence between his tribe and settlers) until forced to surrender, and were relocated first to Oklahoma, and later to Washington. Other famous people from Oregon also include, actor Ty Burrell who was born in Grants Pass Oregon in 1967. He is known for starring in the TV show “Modern Family” since 2009, and you can hear him voice “Bailey” a beluga whale, in the new Disney movie “Finding Dory” coming to theaters on June 17th 2016. Author Beverly Cleary was born in McMinnville Oregon in 1916, and recently turned 100 years old. Her books are sold internationally, and today she is known as one of America’s most successful living authors.
