The Modern Monster “He found them sprawled in sleep, suspecting nothing, their dreams undisturbed. The monster’s thoughts were as quick as his greed and there in the silence, snatched up thirty men” (Beowulf 33-37). During this time, Grendel haunted the Danes for twelve winters by killing soldiers and people in the mead hall at night. He is classified as a monster to the Anglo-Saxons because he ruthlessly killed innocent men, haunted the people because of his attacks, and when someone fights him, he runs off scared like a bully. On May 12th, 2011 America’s most wanted terrorist was killed and his name was Osama Bin Laden who was behind the 9/11 attacks on American Soil. According to the Bible killed his brother Abel and was punished by God. Grendel was a descendant of Cain and “growled in pain, impatient as day after day the music rang” (Beowulf 2-3) because he hated people who worshiped the Almighty because he was punished for Cain’s actions. So one night, Grendel went to the mead hall and “snatched up thirty men, smashed them” (Beowulf 37), he then found joy in his killings because the singings began to grow quieter and quieter and Grendel began to kill more and more. Osama Bin Laden was one of the main leaders of al-Qaeda and began his hatred towards the United States when they came to Saudi Arabia when Saudi Arabia was beginning to ask for help from the Americans, “Osama wrote a letter to the Saudi Minister of the Interior, offering to put together an army of ex-mujahedeen to liberate the tiny state. His offer was refused and shortly afterwards 100,000 U.S. troops arrived on Saudi soil” (Atwan).
