The use of ostomies in the past few decades has increased, yet when asking about previous knowledge of what ostomies are, the average person’s knowledge falls short. An ostomy results from the external diversion through a stoma in the abdomen. Ostomies can either redirect the movement of feces or urine. The most common ostomies include both an ileostomy and colostomy for the removal of feces, and an urostomy for removing urine from the body. Ostomies can be made for many reasons, some reasons being: diverticulitis, different forms of cancer, trauma, and irritable bowel syndrome. Per the United Ostomy Associations of America, Inc., currently about 750,000 Americans are living with some type of ostomy, whether that be an ileostomy, colostomy, …show more content…
Like for any education, the nurse should know what the disease or device is. For conducting teaching for someone with an ileostomy, it is important for the nurse to know what an ileostomy is and the differences between different types of ostomies. Another topic the nurse must know is how to properly care for the device because it is important for the patient to prevent the risk of infection through the stoma. The nurse should also have some tips and tricks on what the patient should follow for their diet, hygiene, and even what to do when traveling. Nurses interact most with the patient, so it is important for nurses to “…be aware that their knowledge and skills can help to enhance quality of life before and after ostomy surgery” (Dabirian et al., 2011). All this information is imperative for a patient who has either a permanent or temporary ileostomy because the care for an ileostomy is the same no matter how long the device will be …show more content…
The patient had received the temporary ileostomy because of the surgery and would be needing to take care of it for the next four to six weeks. The patient was not maintaining an adequate diet while at home before the planned surgery. The patient stated that when first coming into the hospital she did not know anything about ileostomy care, however since it had been a week since she was first admitted when I talked to her, she stated she had a general idea of what to do but still felt like she needed to learn. One learning need I observed from the patient was her needing a visual handout on the information to take home with her. I knew this because the patient stated they felt that after being home for a couple of days they would forget all the information they had just learned in the hospital. I also knew that the patient needed to have a good amount of time to digest the information and can ask questions about care because when we were talking earlier in the day, it was apparent that the patient had many questions and at times would get overwhelmed about her ileostomy. Therefore, a handout the patient could bring home with them and look over would be best for this patient because she was overwhelmed to
