The root of all problems in Othello is jealousy. Initially, Iago is jealous Othello decides to pick a “forsooth, a great arithmetician, one Michael Cassio” (1.1.21-22) to be his lieutenant instead of him. That jealousy Iago has sprouts hatred towards Cassio and Othello. Iago’s acquaintance Roderigo also dislikes Othello because he is jealous that Othello married Desdemona, whom he has affections for. Roderigo claims he “will incontinently drown [him]self” (1.3.301) because he cannot stand to have Desdemona be with anyone besides himself. Roderigo helps Iago because he was promised that by the time Iago is done with his plans, Roderigo will be able to have Desdemona to himself.
