The novel “Out of this furnace” educates all readers by explaining and giving us an idea on how times were in the 18th to 19th century’s. The struggles that Slovak’s had to go through during their way to America. Their struggles of finding jobs and sometimes their accomplishments. Explaining how the jobs were dangerous and the workers would risk their lives to get money for their families. This book is mainly about 3 generations of an immigrant Slovak family Starting which George Kracha, then kracha’s daughter Mary which was married to Mike Dobrejack and the third generation Dobie Dobrejack.

In the railroads he would help build them, he would help build them and also line up and surface the tracks, renewed ties, replaced rails, cleaned ditches and repaired fences at times. In august he would go back to farming where he learned the name of tools and how to use them. After a while he then moved to working at the mill and the mill was too much work. He would basically work, eat and sleep, he would work sometimes day shift or night shifts seven days a week. He was ok with that because the mills paid more than the railroads but even though he liked the railroads better he had to maintain his family so he stayed. In the mills Slovaks and some unskilled workers decided to have a strike that meant that everybody would stop working until the workers got what they wanted. That caused 10 men deaths which 7 of them were steel workers and left 60 wounded. In homestead Kracha helped produce steel plates and helped produce metal in Braddock. After Dubik’s death in the furnace explosion George decided that he would make his own business. He talked to every one about it and he made up his mind to buy the meat market and start business. He then owned 2 horses and wagons, he had a man and 2 boys working for him and he had money saved up. He then knew that the business was not going to be easy he knew he had to pay rent, wages, taxes and bills to pay. Kracha once thought that one day he would have the time to learn English, take out his first paper, and to try to educate himself about the history. He knew his children would be Americans already since they were born there. But he gave up in all of that because of the wages. Mike once he turned of age he had applied for his first papers. He learned how to read and write English and learned a lot of history from his past teachers. He was sure that he was going to be Americanized in a few
