Nineteen hijackers seized four U.S. commercial airplanes and used them as weapons to attack the Twin Towers and the Pentagon. This shook the nation and effected both the economy and national security. However, Americans overcame the attempt to damage their society’s values by becoming closer and standing together against terrorism. Rudy Giuliani, the former Mayor of New York City, clearly states how the American way of life and values won’t be influenced by the attacks. “The attacks of September 11th were intended to break our spirit. Instead, we have emerged stronger and more unified. We feel renewed devotion to the principles of political, economic and religious freedom, the rules of law and respect for human life. We are more determined than ever to live our lives in freedom.” Even though the attacks were meant to shatter everything the nation represented, the United States came together and maintained a united front against terrorism. American flags were hung outside of homes, memorials were built, and patriotism soared. Every year since the attacks, Americans commemorate all of those who were killed in the attacks.
