Throughout the novel, Frankenstein, Mary Shelley uses the characters to convey how the absence of love affects all people’s actions. Sentence? The way that Victor treats the monster, with no love, influences the way the monster lives, treating other people without love, similarly to the way that Victor treats him. No one ever showed love to the monster so he deals with multiple characters in the story the same way, without love. Without being shown love, the monster became incapable of showing it to other people. William chooses to not show love to the monster, screaming “Monster! Ugly wretch! … You are an ogre!” (108) creating more hate for the human species in the monster’s eyes. The absence of love in this scene, leads to death for William. The monster never expressed love to anyone, because no one ever reciprocated that feeling to him. Without being given a chance and not being shown love by anyone, the monster came to be lonely. His loneliness sparked his motivation for murdering William and Justine; He wants revenge on the people that never treated him the way he deserves. The absence of love affects the monster with the negative feeling of being different. Society never showed love to the monster, stimulating his war on mankind. Mary Shelley communicates that in the absence of love, loneliness evolves, and with that bad decisions result.
