In Connel’s short story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” the moral is to not be so overconfident of skill and strength and the author shows this by General Zaroff’s actions.
Zaroff’s overconfidence leads him to have low expectations and, as a result, makes a fatal mistake that costs him his life.
Zaroff finds Rainsford on the first morning on a tree, however, lets him go because he is overconfident he’ll win. According to the story (Connel 15), “But the sharp eyes of the hunter stopped before they reached the limb where Rainsford lay; a smile spread over his brown face.” This shows that Zaroff probably knew very well that that Rainsford was hidden on the branch of tree.
