The overthrow of the Hawaiian kingdom was something that happened on January 7, 1893. On that day, there were many people who were sad, but there were also some people that were happy. Although the ruler of Hawaii at the time was Queen Liliuokalani, even before she officially surrendered she was never fully in control. She badly wanted for her kingdom to stop relying so heavily on the U.S., but in the end she needed give it up. Although the overthrow created the Hawaii we know today, many people were hurt emotionally, and it was all an illegal plot. The U.S. had made a treaty with Hawaii that put a tariff on Hawaiian sugar which many businessmen were mad about. They thought the only way for their businesses to stay strong was to get the U.S. to annex Hawaii so that there was no more tariff on their sugar. These people formed many groups such as the missionary boys, Committee of safety, and the Hawaii league. The purpose of all of these groups was to either overthrow the queen or get Hawaii to annex to the U.S. They did whatever it took to get Hawaii one step closer to annexation. Although they thought it was going to be easy, it proved to be harder than they thought when James Blount (an investigator) was sent to investigate the annexation by President Cleveland. James Blount wrote a very long paper about everything he had heard and had concluded that the annexation was not an interest for the Native Hawaiians, and was just a illegal plot formed by many different groups. Currently Hawaii is the fiftieth state in the U.S. and is known worldwide as a tropical getaway. If Hawaii was never annexed to the United States, the number of pure Hawaiians could have possibly gone up and could still be ruled by a king or queen. Although many people from around the world think that Hawaii is perfect, most do not know what kinds of things have happened to make it this way. When Hawaii was annexed many people
