Introduction- In my role as a Health Care Assistant at Neptune Health Centre I have been asked to explain the role of effective communication and interpersonal interaction in the workplace. Using the following case studies to explain what my interactions might entail with each individual and what action I would take in order to communicate effectively in each situation.
In Neptune Health Centre the following forms of communication may be used:-
Contexts
Formal Communication
Formal communication usually follows a set of rules, information sharing using this method occurs in workplace settings between employers and employees. Formal communication can be in the form of written letters and messages. This type of communication is effective because information is shared for a reason and is usually given within a set time frame. Formal communication can occur in Neptune Health Centre when two staff members talk to each other about the medication a patient receives.
Informal Communication
Formal communication is given without any thought this is used mainly between people who know each other and where both people do not have to be so formal around each other. This type of communication may occur in Neptune Health Centre for example when a doctor is talking to another doctor and they ask how they are because they are friends.
One-to One Communication
This communication happens when one individual is talking to another individual, no-one else is involved in this type of communication. One to one communication is important because it helps aid self-esteem and feelings of general well-being. One to one communication is effective because it enables attention to be given to an individual person. An example of this communication in Neptune Health Centre is when the doctor speaks to the patient regarding their medical condition.
Group Communication
It is usually a way of sharing views, ideas, urgent and important information to more than one person at many different times. Group work is effective because the same message can be delivered to a large group which saves time. Group communication can occur in Neptune Health Centre when at a meeting the head of the nursing staff tells them about what they can do to improve the way they communicate with patients.
Verbal
Verbal communication uses words to present ideas, thoughts and feelings. Good communication is the ability to both explain and present ideas clearly through spoken word. An example of
Non-Verbal
Non-verbal communication is when two people who know each other and the language used often tends to be spoken or written by words that are familiar to the client.,,.
Communication
Text Messaging-
A phone is an electronic device used to communicate. Text messaging is described as the exchange of short text messages. In Neptune Health Centre the receptionists may use text messaging to inform a patient to remind them of their appointment time, the people who send the messages are not allowed to give any kind of personal information because there could be anyone using the patient’s phone. This type of communication is formal because it is a message given through an electrical device.
Written-
Written Communication is communication by means of written symbols either printed or handwritten. In Neptune Health Centre an example of written communication would be through letters or emails. An advantage of this type of communication
